Tuesday Driver

The Driver drives the van and shower trailer from the place where we park it between shifts to the site where we offer showers, and then returns it after the shift.

You set up the trailer on arrival—leveling it with jacks, chocking the wheels—and do some of the initial mechanical set-up, including getting the electrical system up and running, hooking up hoses or starting the water pump, and laying out a grey water disposal hose.

You do a little bookkeeping (keeping track of odometer readings and any mechanical issues).

After a roughly three-hour shift in which the trailer operates, giving showers to guests, you help shut it down and drive it back to our parking location where you secure it for the next driver.

Notes:

• Do not sign up for shifts via this volunteerslo.org site, instead sign up as a volunteer at the Shower the People site and we will show you how to sign up for individual shifts.
• You do not need any special driver's license. A regular California driver's license and a reasonably clean driving record is sufficient. We'll help train you and give you an experienced buddy your first couple of times out.
• You may decide to also work as a greeter or shower cleaner once you get the trailer on-site, or you can relax or go elsewhere until it's time to pack up and take the trailer back.
• There's some (un)packing and organizing at the beginning and ending of the shift: moving some boxes of supplies around, setting out mats, letting down staircases. Let us know if you have mobility / dexterity / load-bearing issues. If you can't do any of that, but you can still drive, that's fine.

You don't have to commit to be there every Tuesday. We'll let you know how you can schedule which shifts you want to take.
