We have a volunteer day coming up next Saturday, October 15th from 9-12. I'm hoping you can join us as we really need your help!
You've probably heard about all the dead trees in Cambria, and the trees on the preserve are no exception. We recently completed treatments of several test plots in our Monterey pine forest, which were designed to reduce the hazard of wild fire and promote forest health. The treatment consisted of clearing dead trees, removing woody debris, topping and limbing large hazardous trees and thinning healthy trees growing too close together.
We need your help to wrap up the project by helping us spread a bunch of piles of mulch that resulted from our treatments. We will be spreading most of the mulch on the forest trails. This will benefit walkers by reducing tripping hazards as well as reducing dust in some areas. The mulch will also greatly benefit the trees with exposed roots on the forest trail. Exposed roots are subject to injury and pests, and the fine roots that supply moisture and oxygen to the trees are often destroyed leading to decline of the tree. The best solution is to cover the area with mulch as this material is porous enough to allow sufficient oxygen and can even encourage fine root growth. It also protects the large roots from damage and supplies nutrients to the soil as it breaks down.
If you can come for the full morning or just part of it, any and all help will be greatly appreciated. If you have a rake, tarp or cart, bring it along. But if you don't have tools, please don't let that stop you! We have tools you can use. We will also have light refreshments to keep everyone going.
We will meet at the Trenton entrance at 9am. We can sign off on community service if you need that.
Please help!
