Central Coast Veterans Memorial Museum
801 Grand Avenue, San Luis Obispo, CA 93401
Join us as we honor the courage, sacrifice, and service of our nation’s heroes at our annual Veterans Day Ceremony in SLO. This year, we are privileged to recognize eight Central Coast veterans, representing service from World War II through Post-9/11, including two extraordinary WWII heroes who both recently turned 105 years old.
Captain Harry Moyer — U.S. Army Air Forces, Flying Tigers
Captain Moyer served with the famed Flying Tigers and flew combat missions across three theaters during WWII. At over 100 years old, he took flight from the San Luis Obispo airport, becoming the oldest pilot in history to fly solo, a feat recorded in the Guinness World Records.
James T. Murphy - U.S. Army, fought in the Battle of Bataan and survived the Bataan Death March and subsequent Japanese POW labor camps. After returning home, he co-authored When Men Must Live, a memoir to educate future generation on what took place and to honor those who suffered greatly and did not return.
Keynote Speaker
Lieutenant Commander John E. Krause, USN (Ret.)
served 24 years in the United States Navy, culminating his career as a Senior Presidential Communications Officer at the White House Communications Agency under Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. On September 11, 2001, he was one of the two senior officers responsible for ensuring secure and reliable communications for the President during and after the attacks — a critical role in one of our nation’s most defining moments. It is truly an honor to have LCDR Krause attending our ceremony this year, and we hope you will join us in welcoming him!
Patriotic music will be performed by the SLO County Band with Morro Bay White Caps and inside the onsite museum, a special display pays tribute to the 250th Anniversary of the US Navy and US Marine Corps.
Following the ceremony a BBQ lunch will be served by American Legion, Post #66, with kid's games, bounce house and craft table in the Museum.
Volunteers are still needed to setup tables prior to the ceremony, beginning onsite at 8:00 am. Contact the museum with your name and contact info to sign-up to volunteer for this event by calling 805-543-1763 or email ccvmm.programs@gmail.com.
