NEED: Volunteers to assist with a myriad of different events for all ages.

JOB DESCRIPTION: Event Assistant covers a range of opportunities helping to prepare, set-up, execute and clean-up a range of events from children’s events, fundraising events, concerts, plant sales, dinners, guest speakers, art exhibits and more. Hours vary and are flexible, but often include weekends and evenings.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Preparation of materials such as programs, flyers, handouts
Event set-up and take-down of tables, chairs, canopies, etc.
Ticket sales, greeting and checking in visitors and guests
Beverage sales and distribution
Food preparation and service

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:
Be reliable, timely and pleasant
Enjoy interacting with the public
Able to life 25lbs (for jobs such as set-up and takedown)

TRAINING: New volunteers will be working alongside experienced volunteers and staff, who explain the process and help with details until they feel comfortable to take on more of a leadership role. A general orientation of the event would be given.

NEED:  Enthusiastic volunteers to build, plant, harvest, teach and have fun!

JOB DESCRIPTION:  If you enjoy being in a beautiful outdoor environment with friendly like-minded people this could be the place for you!

The Botanical Garden was constructed as an inspiring environment filled with beautiful drought-tolerant plants. This position is as creative as you want it to be, or straight-forward beautification.

Tuesdays from 9-11am.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Seed starting, planting, weeding, deadheading, pruning, mulching Path maintenance, some light construction, pest management 

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:  Various gardening jobs require varied levels of physical fitness but anyone is welcome to participate and we can always find a task suitable to a volunteer’s needs and desires.

TRAINING:  Training is provided on site. A general orientation to the garden and its mission will be provided. 

COMMENTS:  We encourage volunteers to wear sturdy footwear and bring their own gloves, water and sunscreen. 

Marketing Outreach

Seeking marketing experts and great salespeople to join our Marketing Team in expanding fundraising opportunities to grow the garden! Using your people skills, creativity and energy you will be part of developing our next phase of the garden which includes a new Education Center, miles of hiking trails and 150 acres of gardens! Joining our team is your chance to impact the entire community with a beautiful oasis right here on the Central Coast! We welcome retired experts, college students and everyone in between! If you've got the passion and skills to get things done, we want you!

JOB DESCRIPTION:  Marketing volunteers are essential for developing outreach materials and advertising to bring new visitors, contributors, members and volunteers to the Garden in order to increase income and carry out the Garden’s mission of connecting people and plants. Hours vary.

Develop materials, programs, products and events to attract and retain prospective contributors, members and volunteers Promote and communicate the Garden’s experience, brand image, and message in all delivery channels As part of a Marketing Committee, make recommendations to the Garden Board on areas of marketing and public relations

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

Experience with marketing and public relations Computer skills including Word, Excel, Power Point or the Mac equivalents Graphic design skills a plus Comfortable speaking about the Garden with people

Garden Gift Shop & Office Assistant
Every Day
10am - 4pm
(2 hour shifts within this time frame)

We're looking for a little extra help with greeting folks who come to the garden at our Garden Gift Shop. You'd get to welcome people in, accept their entry fee and have a perfect opportunity to talk with them about the Garden and all we have to offer! It's really fun meeting our visitors since everyone is in a great mood when they come to SLOBG!

We have 2 hour shifts (or more!) from Mondays-Wednesdays. As these are fairly slow days, you'll have some quiet time between visitors. Here's where you can really help out with your office skills to assist with various admin tasks! We've always got lots of things that need doing: organizing supplies, data input, answering phones, making copies & scans, etc.

Volunteering at the Gift Shop and office is also a great way to get to know the garden better, learn more about Mediterranean plants and climates and meet other volunteers!!

NEED:  Volunteers to conduct garden tours for adults, families, and college students.

JOB DESCRIPTION:  General Docents lead tours of the Garden to various groups and on various occasions.

Their task include teaching and describing:

the history of the development of the garden and its future mission its devotion to plants from the five Mediterranean climate zones the role of these plants in water conservation in the landscape the various adaptations to dry summers that have occurred the uses of these plants by people throughout history the interaction between plants and animals who use them and the public’s role in making this garden a reality.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Conduct Garden tours of interest to the public Be available periodically to be stationed in the Garden to answer questions Keep informed about Garden plans and accomplishments

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

Must display a sincere interest in communicating with people Able to attend and assist at Garden functions Attend occasional in-service meetings for information and updates Be willing and available to conduct two tours per month Monitor and respond promptly to email tour requests Keep records on tour dates and attendance

TRAINING:  General Docents must complete a full training prior to conducting tours. Training sessions are held when needed as new volunteers are recruited.

Docents are taught tour-conducting skills as well as the knowledge necessary to provide the information in the Job Description in an interesting way.

Shadow touring is expected of all new docents to build confidence and skill.

For those with teaching experience or other experience communicating with the public, an individualized training program is available.

NEED:  Volunteers to assist maintaining the buildings, equipment and hardscape surrounding the Garden

JOB DESCRIPTION:  Facilities maintenance volunteers are responsible for:

reviewing and maintaining the Administration Offices and Oak Glen Pavilion maintaining other structures in the Garden such as the Garden Kiosk, and Propagation facilities.

Volunteers may also be asked to help with:

design and construction of new structures assist with weed control and irrigation maintenance and lend a hand with general equipment maintenance.

Hours vary and are flexible.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assist with evaluation and maintenance of our straw-bale constructed facilities Assist with maintenance of the Kiosk and Propagation facilities Repair minor damage and problems with buildings, equipment and hardscaping Assist with installation and maintenance of irrigation systems Assist with weed control around all facilities Assist with design and construction of new structures in all areas of the Garden Assist with implementation of new pathways

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS (Optional, will train):

Experience with carpentry, painting, equipment maintenance, electrical work, etc. Available for a flexible schedule which may involve emergency calls Training with weed management, irrigation maintenance, etc a plus Able to work alone or oversee a crew of volunteers Possession of your own tools a plus Must be able to lift 25 lbs.
