Our volunteers work directly with those who have experienced sexual assault and/or intimate partner violence (violence against a former or current romantic or sexual partner) to advocate for them, connect them with shelter, and find the resources they need to move forward. 

Because of the sensitive nature of this work, we ask that volunteers complete a 65-hour training to be state certified as a sexual assault and domestic violence peer counselor. This program is seasonally offered as mostly in-person training over the course of approximately 6 weeks in San Luis Obispo. It is designed to ensure that everyone feels fully prepared, supported, and confident as well as building foundational knowledge and practical skills that are essential to doing this work responsibly.  While the training is a commitment, many volunteers say it is one of the most meaningful ways they’ve ever served their community.

Qualifications to participate in training:
18 Years or Older.
Have a Social Security Number.
Pass a Live Scan background check.
Be willing to serve as a crisis counselor for a minimum 1-year term, taking at least three shifts per month.
Be patient, empathetic, and sensitive to clients’ diverse needs and backgrounds.
Have the ability (or willingness to learn) to communicate effectively with people in crisis and remain calm during crisis situations.
Must maintain complete client & shelter location confidentiality.
Bilingual (English/Spanish) language capabilities are preferred but not required.
