Volunteer: Visitor Center Docent

Visitor center docents staff the front desk, greet visitors and direct them to nearby points of interest as needed, interpret exhibits, conduct regular exhibit upkeep, and assist with future program development. Docents may also have the opportunity to assist with public programs, local community outreach, and in-person field trips for local K-12 students. Docents will receive training to learn about sanctuary research and resource protection programs, visitor center operations and a wide range of natural and cultural resources within the sanctuary. 


Benefits: Volunteers will gain knowledge about marine biology, oceanography, and environmental conservation in connection to the various curriculum offerings and visitor center exhibits. Being a docent also includes invitations to special events, enrichments, and volunteer appreciation programs. College students may be eligible to receive course credit or federal work study hours.

Field trip volunteers assist with running in-person field trip programs for local K-12 schools by leading educational stations to teach them about the sanctuary and its work to protect various resources. Station topics include nature journaling, watersheds, marine debris, and beach exploration. Field trips are currently offered Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. Volunteers will receive training on how to lead stations and learn about topics related to the knowledge needed to be an effective field trip volunteer and visitor center docent.
