Volunteer: Love dogs? Co-raise a future service dog puppy!Raise a future service dog together with a friend, a family member or another puppy raiser. Become a volunteer co-raiser to help provide more life-changing service dogs to people with disabilities! As a co-raiser, you'll share the exciting journey of preparing our future service dogs. No prior dog experience is necessary (we offer mentorship options for first-time raisers.) More flexibility & shorter time commitments while becoming part of an extraordinary community of fellow puppy raisers, volunteers & graduatesHere's the commitment you'll share for the 14 - 18 month journey: Provide a safe and loving environment for a puppy (the only dog under 12 months old in your home). Teach the puppy manners and basic skills with guidance from our supportive network of experienced staff & volunteers. Collaborate closely to monitor the puppy’s progress. Share responsibility for food, feeding a recommended diet, veterinary expenses, and attending an average of two puppy classes per month (either run by Canine Companions or pre-approved classes). Transport the dog to the regional training center at the projected turn-in time. Offer the puppy age-appropriate socialization opportunities, including public outings and veterinary appointments. Ensure the puppy's safety by keeping it on a leash at all times unless supervised in a securely fenced area, and provide a kennel or crate for sleeping indoors. Supervise the puppy throughout the day (some volunteers may even bring their puppy to work with permission). To explore more, visit our puppy raising FAQ, fill out an application interest form or join an upcoming virtual volunteer info. session. Volunteer: Spay & Neuter Cat Trappers - SLO, Morro Bay, Atascadero, Paso & 5 Cities AreasTrap & Transport Cats: This is one of our greatest needs! Set the traps the evening before the vet appointments, the morning of the appointments, transport cats in the traps to the vet’s office. Give directions for ear tipping, testing and vaccination to the vet technician and leave carriers for the cats to recuperate in. In the late afternoon, pickup the cats from the vets office and recuperate the cats in the carriers over night. If more appointments are set, go back to the trapping site that evening and set more traps. In the morning release the cats in the carriers and transport the new cats in the traps to the vet’s office. Keep repeating process until all the cats at the site are altered. The Feline Network pays for all spay & neuter services, provides trap, cat carriers and food to bait the traps. You provide your time and efforts :) If two people work on this together, the process can be shared. We have 2 retired men who live in the south county area who are trapping for us now. We really need one or two trappers in the Morro Bay area and could always use more trappers in the 5 Cities areas. This is a free service that the Feline Network provides to the community. Volunteer: Puppy Raisers Needed! We are looking for puppy raisers for our upcoming puppies! Between now and July, we will be getting several puppies (Labs, Goldens and Doodles). Puppy raising can be a solo or family experience. College students welcome! A puppy raiser is a foster who cares for the puppy for the first 8-10months of its life. The primary goal is to socialize the puppy by bringing it everywhere with you and to start the very basic tasks like Sit, Down, Stay etc. Before you pick up your puppy, a service dog trainer spends an hour with you going over exactly how to train and care for the puppy. We cover all food and vaccine expenses. We also provide collar, leash, kennel and everything else you need to care for the puppy. The only out of pocket cost for our raisers are any additional treats, toys, or clothes they might buy for their puppy. Once the puppy returns to DDG, it starts service dog training! We always reach out to the puppy raiser to invite them back for the graduation process. We request that all puppy raisers live between Orcutt and Paso Robles, but will make exceptions on a case by case basis (for other California cities only!) More FAQ's found here: Puppy Raising FAQ - Doggie Does Good Apply here: Apply to be a puppy raiser today - Doggie Does Good If interested, please email destiny@doggiedogood.com or give us a call at (805)473-1701
