Each year we participate in San Luis Obispo's Annual Holiday Parade.

Our participation both celebrates and brings visibility to a good cause. Our Holiday Float is for our program, New Life K9s, which is dedicated to providing service dogs free of cost to Veterans and first responders with PTSD.

We are looking for a group of volunteers to help us design, craft, build, and assemble our New Life K9s Float for the annual evening parade, which takes place early December. There is a lot to do so if you have woodcutting and building experience, join us. This is a great opportunity for art students/artists, architecture students/architects, engineering students/engineers, and carpenters. If you don't have any previous experience, that's okay too.

We will meet in the fall to schedule the build out and the logistics for the day of the float. The December 2026 parade will be San Luis Obispo's 50th Annual Holiday Parade so it's going to be exciting!

Mission Cars is a nonprofit organization that takes in donated vehicles (cars, trucks, SUVs, motorhomes, and boats), makes repairs as needed, and sells the cars. All of the proceeds made from the car sales go to other nonprofit organizations, one of them being New Life K9s. We are looking for a handy person(s) that can help our Facilities Manager with daily projects. Projects range very widely and focus on general maintenance of a daycare and boarding facility for dogs. The boarding and daycare facility is a nonprofit that supports New Life K9s, a service dog training organization that provides dogs to Veterans or First Responders with PTSD at no charge. Our pet resort is open from 7:30am to 6:00pm on weekdays and on weekends from 8am to 5pm. We will take volunteers anytime during those hours.

Since 1977, Hospice SLO County has depended on the generosity and time of volunteers who offer their voices for kindness, listen with ears of compassion, and open their hearts with love. Volunteers like you are the center of the free non-medical support services we provide to individuals and their loved ones throughout the county.

In-home volunteers provide 3-4 hours per week of service. Support our kitchen team by helping prepare meals for residents at the Oceano Community Center. The ideal candidate for this position is a friendly, outgoing individual who has compassion and empathy for those in life’s difficult situations and whose desire is to offer a warm smile and assistance to the clients. The Front Desk is the busy hub of the Prado Access Center.

Some of the duties the Front Desk Volunteers perform on a regular basis are as follows:

Shift times are 8:00am - 10:00am, 10:00pm - 12:00pm, 12:00pm - 2:00pm

The 40 Prado Warming Center opens between November 1st-March 31st when the weather forecast includes rain or temperatures below 38* F. Volunteers are especially helpful on these nights, as we open up 40 Prado to more people to stay warm and dry throughout the night. Shifts available: 6:00pm - 9:00pm, 9:00pm - 12:00am, 12:00am - 3:00am, 3:00am - 6:00am Volunteers assist with the evening shift, set up cots, help clients check in and get settled and warm for the night, supervise sleeping areas, and help prepare the shelter for the next day. Volunteers can bring a book or work to keep busy while supervising sleeping clients. These shifts are a great opportunity for college students who have course required hours to complete.Hand out any linen, clean clothing, or food as needed.

Help with any clean up that may be needed after dinner has been prepared (dishes, clean off surfaces that were used, put and organize supplies away)

Breakfast servers help with the most important meal of the day!

• Arrive at 7:45am, sign in on the Ipad, and begin set up (make coffee, retrieve supplies, prepare and set out breakfast foods).
• Responsible for checking expiration/best by dates, use food that is closest to its expiration date first.
• Responsible for monitoring breakfast items and replenishing as needed.
• Responsible for notifying staff when breakfast foods or supplies are needed for the next day.

Shift time is daily 7:45am to approximately 9:15am

Dinner Servers:

• Arrive at 4:45pm to check in and finish setting up to serve the evening meal to families first and then the general population.
• Responsible for setting up food to be served, keeping aware of the portion sizes given by staff.
• Responsible for making sure extra meals are not wasted, and properly saved for those who would like seconds or who are arriving late.
• Responsible for working with staff to ensure an efficient serving experience for all.
• Ask staff if there are any “saver meals” for participants arriving late (1st check).

Shifts are Monday through Thursday 4:45pm to approximately 6:15pm.

The Chapman estate is an historical treasure located on the Bluffs of Shell Beach, with breathtaking coastal views, beautiful gardens that include auxiliary structures such as a koi pond, begonia house, windmill, lighthouse, a turn of the century guest cottage, and a Tudor mansion constructed in 1930.  Deep with history inside and out, the home is filled with art and collectibles left by Mr. Chapman for the community to enjoy.

We are seeking individuals interested in learning about the history of this wonderful estate. An interest in gardens, coastal nature, architecture, art, and local history all plays in to our tours offered at the property. We currently offer garden/property history tours of about 40 minutes duration, and our “Glimpse of the Chapman House” tours that add about a half hour inside the house admiring the art, furnishings, and collectibles.

Our Open Gates season for garden tours is April through October. House tours are scheduled year round and are in high demand, so we are looking to provide training and shadowing opportunities for the full Glimpse of the Chapman House garden history and house tours in October. 

Once/week tour commitments, usually 3 hr “shifts” with 1-2 tours.  Also need shadowing volunteers to accompany the lead docent on house tours so there are always 2 foundation staff in the house to guide the front and back of house tour groups that are normally capped at 12, monitor visitors, prep house for public tours (turn on lighting etc), and post-tour lockup prep.

Docents must be sure footed and able to be on their feet and talk with guests for a 90 minute tour duration, have great and friendly people/communication skills, and alert awareness to monitor guests and conditions and adapt for any noted guest mobility and safety restrictions.

ECHO Shelter Atascadero is currently in need of Overnight Chaperone Volunteers. Available shift dates will vary. 

Overnight chaperoning can quickly satisfy court-mandated community service hours- ECHO is a non-profit 501(c).

Position Description: Volunteers are needed each night from 6:00pm-7:00am the following day (13 hours) to supervise the facility and work in a supportive role with shelter residents. Chaperone duties include: Serving dinner, leading children's' activities, checking clients in for the evening, and offering general support/assistance as needed. Chaperones take turns sleeping in shifts, with one chaperone awake at all times. Start/end time can be flexible. Volunteers can start as late as 9:00pm and leave as early as 5:00am if needed (time adjustments must be discussed in advance). Must enjoy working in a supportive role with others.

Volunteer Tutor/Mentor Opportunity 

Step Up Tutoring is seeking volunteers to provide virtual 1-on-1 tutoring to 2nd-6th grade students from underserved communities to help build fundamental math and literacy skills and to provide support and encouragement. All tutoring will take place virtually! All you need is a computer and internet access. No prior tutoring experience is needed.

One of the ways Spokes guides and supports nonprofit organizations is by providing advice and counsel from experienced mentors. After orientation, you'll be matched with a nonprofit leader and/or organization that has requested coaching or consultation from someone with your particular skill set and experience. If you like to teach, you might also lead workshops or facilitate roundtables. Although the bulk of our work is done virtually, there may be occasional opportunities for face-to-face work with a client.

The commitment is just 6 hours a month for at least one year and involves forming a meaningful relationship with a child or youth in your region who is facing adversity and whose parent/guardian has requested support. You can choose which age group you're interested in mentoring and provide us with all the details of your perfect match. Like hiking? Enjoy art projects? Play music? We'll find your ideal match.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Luis Obispo County is seeking creative and motivated Marketing Volunteers to support our efforts in promoting our mission of empowering youth through mentorship. Our Marketing Volunteers will assist in creating content, managing social media, and developing marketing strategies to engage our community and attract volunteers, donors, and partners. 

Key Responsibilities

- Content Creation: Develop engaging content for social media platforms, newsletters, and the organization’s website, including graphics, photos, videos, and written copy.

Trap & Transport Cats:

This is one of our greatest needs!

Set the traps the evening before the vet appointments, the morning of the appointments, transport cats in the traps to the vet’s office. Give directions for ear tipping, testing and vaccination to the vet technician and leave carriers for the cats to recuperate in.

In the late afternoon, pickup the cats from the vets office and recuperate the cats in the carriers over night. If more appointments are set, go back to the trapping site that evening and set more traps. In the morning release the cats in the carriers and transport the new cats in the traps to the vet’s office. Keep repeating process until all the cats at the site are altered.

The Feline Network pays for all spay & neuter services, provides trap, cat carriers and food to bait the traps.  You provide your time and efforts :)

If two people work on this together, the process can be shared.  We have 2 retired men who live in the south county area who are trapping for us now.  We really need one or two trappers in the Morro Bay area and could always use more trappers in the 5 Cities areas.

Serve as a liaison between the Alzheimer's Association and local faith groups and congregations by sharing information about Alzheimer’s disease, free resources offered through the Alzheimer’s Association, and the many ways to join our cause at local community and education events.

Deliver community education programs using prepared training materials on topics related to Alzheimer’s disease, other dementias and memory loss as well as information for individuals and families impacted by the disease.

We are looking for volunteers to facilitate dementia caregiver support groups throughout San Luis Obispo County, particularly in:

- Cambria
- 5 Cities

- Spanish speaking

This volunteer position facilitates support groups for caregivers of someone with any type of dementia.
After completing the training, we ask for a minimum of a one-year commitment of at least monthly meetings of the support group, participation in ongoing quarterly education and check-in's with the local Alzheimer's Association program manager.

Translating: Our patients are encouraged to bring translators, but they are not always able to do so. We are looking for volunteers who can either come in person or be available via phone to help translate for our patients and providers. This position can be virtual or in-person.

Front Desk Support: This role would include answering phones and educating our patients about the resources we offer. You would also help schedule, educate, and interact with patients who have any questions.

The Central Coast Veterans Memorial Museum is lin need of volunteers to do a variety of clerical tasks including passing out informational fliers and sharing about the museum at local outreach events.

If you like getting crafty, this is an amazing opportunity to add some art to school gardens! We are always in need of painted garden signs, birdhouses, insect hotels, etc. This is an independent position completed from home suitable for all ages. We are open to all kinds of ideas! 

Do you have an interest in improving the health, academic success, and wellbeing of elementary school students? One Cool Earth is a nonprofit in SLO County creating school garden programs that power healthy, happy and smart youth. We believe every child deserves a place to grow.

The Garden Educator Assistant will work with students and assist a One Cool Earth’s Garden Educator with preparing and teaching lessons in school gardens. They will also perform garden maintenance tasks in the garden. The position would be well-suited for someone who enjoys working with children and has a background knowledge or strong interest in gardening, education, nutrition, biology, and/or natural resource management.

Responsibilities will include assisting One Cool Earth staff to:

ECHO needs support from groups or individuals to help support our nightly dinner program. The dinner program works by volunteer groups purchasing and preparing homemade meals to be served each night at the shelter. The meals are prepared by the meal providers and brought to ECHO ready to serve(You may be able to use our kitchen to prepare your meal if discussed in advance). We do have an oven and stove top available to keep food warm.

Meal providers should arrive at ECHO at 4:00pm to set-up. We ask that you bring 80-100 servings of ready to serve entrée, salad & dressing, a vegetable and dessert (cookies are ideal).

ECHO (El Camino Homeless Organization) provides shelter for some of the men, women, and children experiencing homelessness in SLO County, 365 nights a year. Please consider helping ECHO out as we continue to provide services to those in our county who need it the most!

We’re currently seeking motivated and reliable volunteers to join our organization. Are you interested in working behind-the-scenes at an aquarium? You can learn to feed marine animals, clean tanks, and do tank maintenance!

Your help is needed to care for baby oaks along the Santa Margarita Ranch Learning Among the Oaks (LATO) Trail through the summer! Sign up for one or more Friday morning shifts to assist with watering. It's about 30 minutes of fresh air exercise with a purpose. Enjoy bird watching, family time, or meet friends.

We are looking for mothers with infants under 6 months of age and who both bottle-feed and breastfeed to participate in this study. All study assessments will occur within the Healthy Kids Lab on Cal Poly's campus. Families who enroll in this study will be asked to visit our lab three times for 1-hour assessments and to complete a30-minute online survey. Families who participate will be eligible to receive up to $140.

Responsibilities: to assist Museum visitors in understanding and appreciating what veterans accomplished during their military service in the conflicts displayed; to uphold the Museum’s reputation for excellence; to explain the Museum’s mission statement, the Wall of Honor, and the Veterans History Project; to remain current on the Docent Handbook and on
any updates to it.

Duties: to meet visitors with a smile and a “Welcome to our Museum” greeting; to accompany individuals and groups on tours through the Museum, interpreting each display
and explaining the artifacts; to be flexible enough to adapt the tour to the visitor’s needs or interests; to accept artifact donations by completing the donation form, ensuring it is signed
by both the donor and the docent, and to make a photocopy for the donor; to maintain security of the Armory by always accompanying the visitors on tours of the Armory; to be a
lifelong learner; to consult with the Docent Coordinator or Museum Curator as needed; to be on time for duty.
