Volunteer: Join our Disaster Action Team and provide disaster relief to neighbors in need

Disaster Action Team Member
Respond to local disaster scenes to meet the needs of those affected by disasters such as providing shelter and food and other Red Cross services.

Most of the 60,000 emergencies that the Red Cross responds to each year are local, personal disasters like home fires. They may not make the news, but we know they are just as devastating to the families affected. Trained and available, Disaster Action Team volunteers are ready to respond to these emergencies, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. From offering a shoulder to cry on, to meeting any immediate needs for shelter or supplies, to connecting people with long term recovery services, our volunteers ensure that families don’t have to face tough times alone.

Disaster Action Team volunteers help local families cope with emergencies.

Home fires and other disasters can occur any time, any place. As a Disaster Action Team volunteer, you’ll provide emotional support, financial assistance, and information to help families begin the process of recovery. After your initial training, your shifts will include responding to emergencies within 2 hours, night or day, rain or shine, either on the scene or coordinating remotely to provide immediate compassion and care. With experience and further training you can take on leadership and response coordination roles to have a wider impact. At the same time, you’ll be developing skills that you may choose to apply to larger-scale disaster response efforts with the Red Cross.

REQUIRED TRAINING
(all training provided by Red Cross)

Volunteer: Heroes Assemble! Health Professionals needed to provide Red Cross care during disasters

Are you a licensed health care professional? Get prepared now to help people in disaster shelters.

Due to being in the midst of an active wildfire season and the complexities of COVID-19, the Red Cross needs thousands of volunteers to care for people when disasters strike.

What is this role?

We need volunteers who can work in emergency shelters to help assess people’s health and provide hands-on care in alignment with their professional licensure (RN and LPN/LVN). We also need volunteers who can provide care as delegated by a licensed nurse in shelters; this could include assisting with activities of daily living, personal assistance services, providing health education, and helping to replace medications, durable medical equipment, or consumable medical supplies.

If you are an RN, LPN, LVN, APRN, NP, EMT, paramedic, MD/DO, or PA with an active, current, and unencumbered license, this is a role for you. Our wildfire shelter response teams are there to provide care and comfort to our communities while displaced during disasters. As wildfire season approaches, we have altered our response methods to abide by the guidelines established by our local public health departments and the CDC to best protect the safety of our clients, volunteers, and staff during COVID-19. Natural disasters can strike at any moment, and we are working to prepare our communities in case that happens.

Requirements:

Have an active license in one of the following: Registered Nurse (RN), Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN), Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Paramedic, Medical Doctor (MD), Doctor of Osteopathy (DO), Physician Assistant (PA), Nurse Practitioner (NP), Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) Ability to complete online training - 6 hours Attend 1 shelter team update virtual meeting per month Flexible availability (preferably during Wildfire season June-November) Minimum of 5 days working 4-, 6- or 12-hour shifts during a two-week period during a disaster response

Many meal providers organize groups of cooks, each of which makes one part of a meal to provide 60-100 meals. Others buy pizza or support local restaurants by purchasing meals from them. The possibilities are almost endless!

ECHO has a supply of canned and dry goods that are available to meal providers to pick up for free to use in their meals. ECHO also places weekly orders with the SLO food bank and can order food for meal providers to use in their meals with enough notice.

All meals must be prepared off site and delivered to the shelter at 4:15 pm on your scheduled meal provider date.

Available Meal Provider Dates for December

Friday December 10th, Sunday the 12th, Monday the 13th, Tuesday the 21st, Wednesday the 22nd, Thursday the 23rd, Wednesday the 29th, and Thursday the 30th.

For more information or to sign up, contact Pearl Herrera at pherrera@echoshelter.org or 805-538-3947.

Volunteer: Garden Gift Shop & Office Assistants

Would you like to spend more time at SLO Botanical Garden? Do you enjoy meeting like-minded plant enthusiasts? Are you an ambassador for our beautiful Central Coast and SLO Botanical Garden?
We would love to hear from you!

Garden Gift Shop & Office Assistant
Every Day
10am - 4pm

(2 hour shifts within this time frame)

We're looking for a little extra help with greeting folks who come to the garden at our Garden Gift Shop. You'd get to welcome people in, accept their entry fee and have a perfect opportunity to talk with them about the Garden and all we have to offer! It's really fun meeting our visitors since everyone is in a great mood when they come to SLOBG!

We have 2 hour shifts (or more!) from Mondays-Wednesdays. As these are fairly slow days, you'll have some quiet time between visitors. Here's where you can really help out with your office skills to assist with various admin tasks! We've always got lots of things that need doing: organizing supplies, data input, answering phones, making copies & scans, etc.

Volunteering at the Gift Shop and office is also a great way to get to know the garden better, learn more about Mediterranean plants and climates and meet other volunteers!!

If this sounds like fun to you, and you've got a few hours to spare each week, please write to me at: peter@slobg.org or my counterpart, megan@slobg.org and we'll get you signed up!

Thank you!

Volunteer: Puppy Raisers Needed!

We are looking for puppy raisers for our upcoming puppies! Between now and July, we will be getting several puppies (Labs, Goldens and Doodles). Puppy raising can be a solo or family experience. College students welcome! A puppy raiser is a foster who cares for the puppy for the first 8-10months of its life. The primary goal is to socialize the puppy by bringing it everywhere with you and to start the very basic tasks like Sit, Down, Stay etc. Before you pick up your puppy, a service dog trainer spends an hour with you going over exactly how to train and care for the puppy. We cover all food and vaccine expenses. We also provide collar, leash, kennel and everything else you need to care for the puppy. The only out of pocket cost for our raisers are any additional treats, toys, or clothes they might buy for their puppy. Once the puppy returns to DDG, it starts service dog training! We always reach out to the puppy raiser to invite them back for the graduation process.

We request that all puppy raisers live between Orcutt and Paso Robles, but will make exceptions on a case by case basis (for other California cities only!)    More FAQ's found here: Puppy Raising FAQ - Doggie Does Good  Apply here: Apply to be a puppy raiser today - Doggie Does Good   If interested, please email destiny@doggiedogood.com or give us a call at (805)473-1701

With 512 acres of property and an average of one group staying with us nearly every week, there is plenty to do at Granite Ridge!

We are willing to work with your schedule, interests, and abilities to find a perfect short or long-term project for you.

A few ongoing needs that we always need help with are:

Kitchen Crew: Help serve our campers by preparing meals, baking, and cleaning the kitchen. Landscaping / Maintenance: Do you have specific skills, tools, or even just a willing heart? We always need help with general labor tasks such as mowing, weeding, painting, tree-trimming, trail maintenance, etc.  Office: Stuffing envelopes, signing cards, etc.

Whether you are available for one day per month or once a week, we appreciate any help you are willing to give. If you do wish to volunteer for a weekend or multiple days, there may be free lodging as well depending on what is going on at the camp.

Did we mention that volunteers get free food?!

Volunteer: Empower the Next Generation- Become a Girl Scout Troop Leader!

Do you know what G.I.R.L. stands for? If you ask us, it's Go-Getter, Innovator, Risk-Taker, and Leader. These are the qualities that we want to instill in our girls so they grow up confident, caring, independent, and forward-thinking! BUT, they need leaders and role models to get them there. That's where you come in.

We need troop leaders that want to inspire, educate, lead, and empower the next generation of leaders. We provide training, support, and tons of program and planning resources for you to help guide your girls to success.

Girl Scout Troop Leaders are the backbone of our organization! These are the premier role models and doers of our community.

We have troops forming in every corner of SLO county! Wherever you are, there are Girl Scouts near you that would love to meet a role model like you.

As a troop leader, we'll help you to plan and host 1-4 meetings per month for your Girl Scouts (depending on availability and age level-- every troop is different!). Plus, every troop has at least two leaders, so you'll never be alone or overwhelmed.

The four pillars of Girl Scouts are: STEM, Life Skills, Entrepreneurship, and Outdoors.

If this sounds like a fit for you, please reach out to us and/or visit our website for more information (and to register). girlscoutsccc.org

Volunteer: Board Secretary

The secretary of Colony Days plays a critical role in fostering communication and ensuring proper management and utilization of important organizational records.

Communication – A Primary Role of the Secretary

The secretary of the corporation is an active conduit for communication between the board, management, and members (if any), by giving proper notice of any meetings and timely distribution of materials such as agendas and meeting minutes. The secretary should be knowledgeable of the organization’s records and related materials, and should be able to provide advice and resources to the board on relevant topics at issue, such as particular governance matters being addressed at a meeting or a new amendment to state corporate law, for example. The secretary should aim to be helpful to the board as they discharge their fiduciary duties.

Scheduling, Notice, and Materials

The secretary is tasked with knowing and complying with notice requirements and scheduling meetings to accommodate the directors. Notice requirements can be particularly important and should be complied with strictly, as improper notice can open the organization up to challenge. The secretary is responsible for scheduling board meetings and should ensure an adequate number of meetings are held per year, in accordance with the organization’s bylaws. Generally, a board can more efficiently and effectively hold a board meeting when the secretary prepares and sends meeting materials far enough in advance of the meeting for each director to review such materials, correct any errors, and prepare questions and comments.

Minutes of Meetings

The secretary is also charged with recording minutes of meetings. Minutes are an important organizational document and provide a memorialized chronology of key information such as board actions, elections of officers or directors, and certain reports from committees and staff. Meeting minutes can have vital legal significance in an IRS examination and as evidence in courts if, for example, someone challenges the validity of certain actions or positions. The secretary should be well-equipped to record accurate minutes and be aware and sensitive to any special or confidential information discussed at a meeting. For more information about minutes generally, see Board Meeting Minutes – Part I and Part II.

Maintenance of Corporate Records

As the custodian of the organization’s records, the secretary is responsible for maintaining accurate documentation and meeting legal requirements, such as annual filing deadlines. It may be helpful for the secretary to have a calendar of filing deadlines, which may include a filing with the corporation’s Secretary of State, the Attorney General, the state tax agency, and the IRS. The secretary is responsible for reviewing and updating documents as necessary and ensuring all documents are safely stored and readily accessible for inspection by directors and/or members. In California, an organization’s articles of incorporation and bylaws, as amended to date, should be available at the corporation’s principal office for inspection. Additionally, it is required that a nonprofit’s exemption application and past three annual returns with the IRS are available for public inspection.

The secretary position has wide-ranging responsibilities, requiring much more than simply being present at all board meetings. These duties likely will increase if the corporation has a voting membership structure, which requires additional notice procedures and voting. Each board should carefully consider how the secretary can best serve their organization.

We are hoping to add some non-SLO Wind Orchestra musicians to our board and are hoping for people with a background in law, marketing, or finance. However, we are open to individuals from all different backgrounds.

To join the board, we would set up a meeting with you to learn more about you and to share more about our orchestra then go from there. Our current board meets roughly 7 times a year. Board meetings are generally held at the Cuesta College Music Library.

We have roughly 5 committees that meet each year ranging from the artistic planning committee to our fund development committee. Meeting dates and locations vary.

We would be delighted if you're interested in learning more. Please contact our Executive Director for more details at 805-464-9434 or Director@SLOwinds.org

Volunteer: Looking for outreach coordinator

This is a wonderful outreach position for a volunteer that either loves making calls or is a social butterfly.

We are just getting our nonprofit started and we need someone to help us forge relationships with:

Nonprofits that could benefit from our mission of bringing their participants to amazing life experiences Business owners willing to donate or discount said experiences.

Right now we are partnered with climbing gyms and a horseback riding outfit in Cambria, but the more the merrier.

It's very hard to get already stretched nonprofits to engage with us to take advantage of what we offer, so we need someone who doesn't mind being our helper!
