LOCATION: San Luis Obispo Botanical Garden, off Highway 1 in El Chorro Regional Park, between San Luis Obispo and Morro Bay.
NEED: Volunteers to assist maintaining the buildings, equipment and hardscape surrounding the Garden
JOB DESCRIPTION: Facilities maintenance volunteers are responsible for:
- reviewing and maintaining the Administration Offices and Oak Glen Pavilion
- maintaining other structures in the Garden such as the Garden Kiosk, and Propagation facilities.
Volunteers may also be asked to help with:
- design and construction of new structures
- assist with weed control and irrigation maintenance
- and lend a hand with general equipment maintenance.
Hours vary and are flexible.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist with evaluation and maintenance of our straw-bale constructed facilities
- Assist with maintenance of the Kiosk and Propagation facilities
- Repair minor damage and problems with buildings, equipment and hardscaping
- Assist with installation and maintenance of irrigation systems
- Assist with weed control around all facilities
- Assist with design and construction of new structures in all areas of the Garden
- Assist with implementation of new pathways
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS (Optional, will train):
- Experience with carpentry, painting, equipment maintenance, electrical work, etc.
- Available for a flexible schedule which may involve emergency calls
- Training with weed management, irrigation maintenance, etc a plus
- Able to work alone or oversee a crew of volunteers
- Possession of your own tools a plus
- Must be able to lift 25 lbs.
TRAINING: New volunteers will be working alongside experienced volunteers who explain the process and help with details until they feel comfortable to take on more of a leadership role. A general orientation to the garden and its mission will be provided.
