Description

Raise a future service dog together with a friend, a family member or another puppy raiser. Become a volunteer co-raiser to help provide more life-changing service dogs to people with disabilities! As a co-raiser, you'll share the exciting journey of preparing our future service dogs.

  • No prior dog experience is necessary (we offer mentorship options for first-time raisers.)
  • More flexibility & shorter time commitments while becoming part of an extraordinary community of fellow puppy raisers, volunteers & graduates

Here's the commitment you'll share for the 14 - 18 month journey:

  • Provide a safe and loving environment for a puppy (the only dog under 12 months old in your home).
  • Teach the puppy manners and basic skills with guidance from our supportive network of experienced staff & volunteers.
  • Collaborate closely to monitor the puppy’s progress.
  • Share responsibility for food, feeding a recommended diet, veterinary expenses, and attending an average of two puppy classes per month (either run by Canine Companions or pre-approved classes).
  • Transport the dog to the regional training center at the projected turn-in time.
  • Offer the puppy age-appropriate socialization opportunities, including public outings and veterinary appointments.
  • Ensure the puppy's safety by keeping it on a leash at all times unless supervised in a securely fenced area, and provide a kennel or crate for sleeping indoors.
  • Supervise the puppy throughout the day (some volunteers may even bring their puppy to work with permission).
