The Greeter works on-site at one or more of the locations where Shower the People SLO operates. You will greet our guests, learn their needs, give them the supplies they need (e.g. underwear, socks, toothbrush/toothpaste, comb) from our supplies, and help us keep statistics about who our guests are. You also keep track of what order guests have signed up in, so you know who is next to shower.
It's important that you be hospitable and welcoming. Sometimes letting someone get something off their chest to a good listener is as important a service as giving them a shower, so you also need to be patient and sympathetic.
Notes:
- Do not sign up for shifts via this volunteerslo.org site, instead sign up as a volunteer at the Shower the People site and we will show you how to sign up for individual shifts.
- There's some (un)packing and organizing at the beginning and ending of the shift: moving some boxes of supplies around and setting up a table. It's not too daunting, and you can get help from some other staff on duty if you have mobility or other such issues.
- There is a shade awning, but if it's very windy we may have to retract it, so you need to be able to tolerate some sun.
- Occasionally we have guests who speak Spanish more fluently than English, so some Spanish fluency is a plus (but not a requirement).
You don't have to commit to be there every Sunday. We'll let you know how you can schedule which shifts you want to take.
