Volunteer: Empower the Next Generation- Become a Girl Scout Troop Leader!

Do you know what G.I.R.L. stands for? If you ask us, it's Go-Getter, Innovator, Risk-Taker, and Leader. These are the qualities that we want to instill in our girls so they grow up confident, caring, independent, and forward-thinking! BUT, they need leaders and role models to get them there. That's where you come in.

We need troop leaders that want to inspire, educate, lead, and empower the next generation of leaders. We provide training, support, and tons of program and planning resources for you to help guide your girls to success.

Girl Scout Troop Leaders are the backbone of our organization! These are the premier role models and doers of our community.

We have troops forming in every corner of SLO county! Wherever you are, there are Girl Scouts near you that would love to meet a role model like you.

As a troop leader, we'll help you to plan and host 1-4 meetings per month for your Girl Scouts (depending on availability and age level-- every troop is different!). Plus, every troop has at least two leaders, so you'll never be alone or overwhelmed.

The four pillars of Girl Scouts are: STEM, Life Skills, Entrepreneurship, and Outdoors.

If this sounds like a fit for you, please reach out to us and/or visit our website for more information (and to register). girlscoutsccc.org

Volunteer: Join our Disaster Action Team and provide disaster relief to neighbors in need

Disaster Action Team Member
Respond to local disaster scenes to meet the needs of those affected by disasters such as providing shelter and food and other Red Cross services.

Most of the 60,000 emergencies that the Red Cross responds to each year are local, personal disasters like home fires. They may not make the news, but we know they are just as devastating to the families affected. Trained and available, Disaster Action Team volunteers are ready to respond to these emergencies, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. From offering a shoulder to cry on, to meeting any immediate needs for shelter or supplies, to connecting people with long term recovery services, our volunteers ensure that families don’t have to face tough times alone.

Disaster Action Team volunteers help local families cope with emergencies.

Home fires and other disasters can occur any time, any place. As a Disaster Action Team volunteer, you’ll provide emotional support, financial assistance, and information to help families begin the process of recovery. After your initial training, your shifts will include responding to emergencies within 2 hours, night or day, rain or shine, either on the scene or coordinating remotely to provide immediate compassion and care. With experience and further training you can take on leadership and response coordination roles to have a wider impact. At the same time, you’ll be developing skills that you may choose to apply to larger-scale disaster response efforts with the Red Cross.

REQUIRED TRAINING
(all training provided by Red Cross)
* Orientation to the American Red Cross
* On the job Disaster Services Training, Psychological First Aid, and others
* Able to respond reliably when scheduled to be on call
* Must have a valid driver's license and/or a timely, reliable way to get to the scene

Ready to Make a Difference? Here's How to Get Started!

Volunteer: Continuing Education Director

Note: Do not sign up for this opportunity via this volunteerslo.org site, instead sign up as a volunteer at the Shower the People site.

On-site volunteers for Shower the People are trained for their particular roles (greeter, cleaner, driver, supervisor) on-site by experienced mentors.

But we occasionally want to offer additional training to volunteers that goes beyond this. Examples might include:

Conflict de-escalation techniquesTrauma-informed care insightsHow to work with emotionally-demanding guestsSelf-care techniques for avoiding burnout

As the Continuing Education Director, you would:

Consult with the operations committee to discern which sorts of trainings would be most useful.Discover opportunities for such trainings in the community or people who could provide the trainings. (We may, for example, be able to piggy-back on trainings offered by other agencies to their employees or volunteers.)
Pitch a case for any necessary funding to our board of directors.Invite our volunteers to the training.

We anticipate that there will likely be no more than one such training opportunity offered to our volunteers per quarter. But this is flexible.

Volunteer: Sister Programs Liaison

Note: Do not sign up for this opportunity via this volunteerslo.org site, instead sign up as a volunteer at the Shower the People site.

Shower the People is one of several independent programs operating in California that offer showers to people experiencing homelessness.

There is great potential for us to improve our processes by learning from the successes and mistakes of other programs. However currently there is only very limited communication between these many programs.

As Sister Programs Liaison you would be responsible for establishing and maintaining lines of communication between Shower the People and its sister programs elsewhere in California.

We do not anticipate this being a job with a great deal of daily workload, but there may be times when we want to consult with the larger network of programs about questions like:

How does your program respond to [some challenging problem]?What product does your program use for [some need]?How is your program responding to [some grant opportunity or some new law]?

As Sister Programs Liaison you would be responsible for contacting representatives from these programs about questions like these (which you would get from the Shower the People operations committee or board of directors) and then summarizing the answers you receive for the use of our program.

You would also be responsible for fielding questions from these other programs to us, and forwarding them to members of our team who can best answer them.

We already have a good list of programs operating in California along with contact information, but you would also be responsible for maintaining this list as new programs appear, others fade away, or contact information changes.

If you are particularly ambitious (this is not a requirement of the position), you might also visit some of these sister program sites and report back to us about what you discover.

As the Guest Experience Advocate, you would interview Shower the People guests and potential guests to help identify their needs and learn about their experiences with us. Then you would report on your findings so as to help us improve our processes so we can be an ever more welcoming, safe, clean, and reliable place to shower.

In summary, you would:

Conduct occasional interviews with guests at each of our sites.Conduct occasional interviews with potential guests who do not currently use Shower the People services but who might benefit from them.Work with other Shower the People volunteers to formulate good, revealing questions to ask.Respect guest privacy, and be sensitive when asking about potentially touchy subjects.Write up reports summarizing actionable information learned from your interviews about how Shower the People might become a more welcoming, safe, clean, and reliable place to shower.

Agency: Shower the People

Note: Do not sign up for this opportunity via this volunteerslo.org site, instead sign up as a volunteer at the Shower the People site.

Volunteer: Tuesday Greeter

Note: Do not sign up for shifts via this volunteerslo.org site, instead sign up as a volunteer at the Shower the People site and we will show you how to sign up for individual shifts.

The Greeter works on-site at one or more of the locations where Shower the People SLO operates. You will greet our guests, learn their needs, give them the supplies they need (e.g. underwear, socks, toothbrush/toothpaste, comb) from our supplies, and help us keep statistics about who our guests are. You also keep track of what order guests have signed up in, so you know who is next to shower.

It's important that you be hospitable and welcoming. Sometimes letting someone get something off their chest to a good listener is as important a service as giving them a shower, so you also need to be patient and sympathetic.

Notes

Do not sign up for shifts via this volunteerslo.org site, instead sign up as a volunteer at the Shower the People site and we will show you how to sign up for individual shifts. There's some (un)packing and organizing at the beginning and ending of the shift: moving some boxes of supplies around and setting up a table. It's not too daunting, and you can get help from some other staff on duty if you have mobility or other such issues. There is a shade awning, but if it's very windy we may have to retract it, so you need to be able to tolerate some sun. Occasionally we have guests who speak Spanish more fluently than English, so some Spanish fluency is a plus (but not a requirement).

You don't have to commit to be there every Tuesday. We'll let you know how you can schedule which shifts you want to take.

Volunteer: Tuesday Shower Cleaners

Note: Do not sign up for shifts via this volunteerslo.org site, instead sign up as a volunteer at the Shower the People site and we will show you how to sign up for individual shifts.

The Shower Cleaner works on-site at one or more of the locations where Shower the People SLO operates. After one of our guests finishes using a shower, you will go in, spray things down with sanitizing solution, take out the trash, wipe down and dry down surfaces (including shower, sink, mirror, and toilet), and make sure everything is good for the next guest (shower curtain tucked in, fresh bathmat and towel ready). Then you let our Greeter know that the next guest can come in for their shower.

Notes:

Do not sign up for shifts via this volunteerslo.org site, instead sign up as a volunteer at the Shower the People site and we will show you how to sign up for individual shifts. We have three showers in our trailer. We might give as many as 33 showers on a busy day. So each shower will need as many as eleven clean-ups. If we have a full crew of three cleaners, you'll be cleaning about that many. Sometimes we're short a cleaner and have to work a little harder. We have gloves, masks, PPE body suits, and face shields available. We have relaxed our Covid-related regulations and now only the gloves are mandatory for shower cleaners. There's some (un)packing and organizing at the beginning and ending of the shift: moving some boxes of supplies around, setting out mats, letting down staircases. Let us know if you have mobility / dexterity / load-bearing issues. If you can't do any of that, but you can still clean showers, that's fine. You need to be able to tolerate some sun.

Volunteer: Tuesday Driver

Note: Do not sign up for shifts via this volunteerslo.org site, instead sign up as a volunteer at the Shower the People site and we will show you how to sign up for individual shifts.

The Driver drives the van and shower trailer from the place where we park it between shifts to the site where we offer showers, and then returns it after the shift.

You set up the trailer on arrival—leveling it with jacks, chocking the wheels—and do some of the initial mechanical set-up, including getting the electrical system up and running, hooking up hoses or starting the water pump, and laying out a grey water disposal hose.

You do a little bookkeeping (keeping track of odometer readings and any mechanical issues).

After a roughly three-hour shift in which the trailer operates, giving showers to guests, you help shut it down and drive it back to our parking location where you secure it for the next driver.

Notes:

Do not sign up for shifts via this volunteerslo.org site, instead sign up as a volunteer at the Shower the People site and we will show you how to sign up for individual shifts. You do not need any special driver's license. A regular California driver's license and a reasonably clean driving record is sufficient. We'll help train you and give you an experienced buddy your first couple of times out. You may decide to also work as a greeter or shower cleaner once you get the trailer on-site, or you can relax or go elsewhere until it's time to pack up and take the trailer back. There's some (un)packing and organizing at the beginning and ending of the shift: moving some boxes of supplies around, setting out mats, letting down staircases. Let us know if you have mobility / dexterity / load-bearing issues. If you can't do any of that, but you can still drive, that's fine.

You don't have to commit to be there every Thursday. We'll let you know how you can schedule which shifts you want to take.

Volunteer: Central Coast Hotline Crisis Line Specialist

You can make a difference. As a Central Coast Hotline volunteer, you will become a trained hotline call handler, helping to staff the County’s only 24/7 mental health hotline.

Central Coast Hotline is a valuable resource for the San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara Counties, supporting the work of local government and mental health service agencies and relieving call volume for the local 911 service by taking non-emergency and mental health crisis calls. We are an accredited crisis center, as evaluated by the American Association of Suicidology, which establishes and monitors the criteria for crisis lines in the U.S.

We strive to reduce stigma, educate, and inform our community about mental illness – what it is and what it is not.

We may refer callers with other needs to 2-1-1, the universal three-digit dialing code operated locally by United Way. This is a free information and referral service that connects individuals and families with community resources.

For non-crisis calls, our callers may be referred to the California Peer Support WarmLine at 855-845-7415.

Who answers the line?

Compassionate and highly trained paraprofessional Crisis Line Specialist volunteers and staff based in Santa Luis Obispo, California are available around the clock to answer your calls. Every call is confidential. Staff and volunteers’ primary goal is to listen and to offer support and referrals to mental health resources in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara Counties. We are happy to assist family members or friends who call on another’s behalf. Spanish-speaking Crisis Line Specialists and Language Line interpreter services are also available. Our Hotline is available 24/7.

Who are the volunteers?

Volunteer Crisis Line Specialists form the core of this service. Ranging in age from 18 to 80, they bring a diversity of experience and skills, and share a common interest in helping others. We are always in need of volunteers, so please contact us to “Be the Voice on the Other End of the Line.”

As a volunteer, you will be trained to help staff San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara Counties' only 24/7 suicide prevention and mental health resource hotline and will make a difference in the lives of youth, seniors, and families. Volunteer: Spay & Neuter Cat Trappers - SLO, Morro Bay, Atascadero, Paso & 5 Cities Areas

Trap & Transport Cats:

This is one of our greatest needs!

Set the traps the evening before the vet appointments, the morning of the appointments, transport cats in the traps to the vet’s office. Give directions for ear tipping, testing and vaccination to the vet technician and leave carriers for the cats to recuperate in.

In the late afternoon, pickup the cats from the vets office and recuperate the cats in the carriers over night. If more appointments are set, go back to the trapping site that evening and set more traps. In the morning release the cats in the carriers and transport the new cats in the traps to the vet’s office. Keep repeating process until all the cats at the site are altered.

The Feline Network pays for all spay & neuter services, provides trap, cat carriers and food to bait the traps.  You provide your time and efforts :)

If two people work on this together, the process can be shared.  We have 2 retired men who live in the south county area who are trapping for us now.  We really need one or two trappers in the Morro Bay area and could always use more trappers in the 5 Cities areas.

This is a free service that the Feline Network provides to the community.

If two people work on this together, the process can be shared.  We have 2 retired men who live in the south county area who are trapping for us now.  We really need one or two trappers in the Morro Bay area and could always use more trappers in the 5 Cities areas.

This is a free service that the Feline Network provides to the community.

Volunteer: Mentor - Big Brothers Big Sisters

We are seeking volunteer mentors to be matched with a child or youth in the community. The commitment is just 6 hours a month for at least one year and involves forming a meaningful relationship with a child or youth in your region who is facing adversity and whose parent/guardian has requested support. Mentors and children are strategically matched and professionally supported throughout the length of their relationship.

You can choose which age group you're interested in mentoring and provide us with all the details of your perfect match. Like hiking? Enjoy art projects? Play music? We'll find your ideal match.

It takes a while to be matched - you'll go through a process of interviews and background checks - but it's worth the wait. Volunteer mentors in our programs get as much out of the process as our mentees do.

One-to-one mentor relationships change children's lives for the better, forever!

Visit: www.slobigs.org or call: 805-781-3226 for more information.
