Volunteer: Docents

The Chapman estate is an historical treasure located on the Bluffs of Shell Beach, with breathtaking coastal views, beautiful gardens that include auxiliary structures such as a koi pond, begonia house, windmill, lighthouse, a turn of the century guest cottage, and a Tudor mansion constructed in 1930.  Deep with history inside and out, the home is filled with art and collectibles left by Mr. Chapman for the community to enjoy.

We are seeking individuals interested in learning about the history of this wonderful estate. An interest in gardens, coastal nature, architecture, art, and local history all plays in to our tours offered at the property. We currently offer garden/property history tours of about 40 minutes duration, and our “Glimpse of the Chapman House” tours that add about a half hour inside the house admiring the art, furnishings, and collectibles.

Our Open Gates season for garden tours is April through October. House tours are scheduled year round and are in high demand, so we are looking to provide training and shadowing opportunities for the full Glimpse of the Chapman House garden history and house tours in October.

Once/week tour commitments, usually 3 hr “shifts” with 1-2 tours.  Also need shadowing volunteers to accompany the lead docent on house tours so there are always 2 foundation staff in the house to guide the front and back of house tour groups that are normally capped at 12, monitor visitors, prep house for public tours (turn on lighting etc), and post-tour lockup prep.

Docents must be sure footed and able to be on their feet and talk with guests for a 90 minute tour duration, have great and friendly people/communication skills, and alert awareness to monitor guests and conditions and adapt for any noted guest mobility and safety restrictions.

Volunteer: Central Coast Hospice Volunteers Needed

Thank you for your interest in learning about how to support those dealing with end-of-life concerns.

We are currently accepting applicants who already have experience as patient care hospice volunteers.

The training will be fast tracked to incorporate you into our agency.

We also have an upcoming 3 day training for brand new hospice volunteers in October.

A hospice volunteer typically provides 2-4 hours a week of companionship, emotional and practical support, or respite care to the patients and families that Central Coast Hospice (CCH) serves. Volunteers are a vital part of the hospice team as they can provide the time and attention that patients and families need and deserve. CCH serves patients from Paso Robles to Santa Barbara. Volunteers help the same patient each week and we do our best to match volunteers to patients that live near them.

We hope you can join our team! An application and an informal interview are required. If you have questions, please contact us at 805-540-6020.

Volunteer: Wednesday Shower Cleaners

Note: Do not sign up for shifts via this volunteerslo.org site, instead sign up as a volunteer at the Shower the People site and we will show you how to sign up for individual shifts.

The Shower Cleaner works on-site at one or more of the locations where Shower the People SLO operates. After one of our guests finishes using a shower, you will go in, spray things down with sanitizing solution, take out the trash, wipe down and dry down surfaces (including shower, sink, mirror, and toilet), and make sure everything is good for the next guest (shower curtain tucked in, fresh bathmat and towel ready). Then you let our Greeter know that the next guest can come in for their shower.

Notes:

Do not sign up for shifts via this volunteerslo.org site, instead sign up as a volunteer at the Shower the People site and we will show you how to sign up for individual shifts. We have three showers in our trailer. We might give as many as 33 showers on a busy day. So each shower will need about eleven clean-ups. If we have a full crew of three cleaners, you'll be cleaning about that many. Sometimes we're short a cleaner and have to work a little harder. We have gloves, masks, PPE body suits, and face shields available. We have relaxed our Covid-related regulations and now only the gloves are mandatory for shower cleaners. There's some (un)packing and organizing at the beginning and ending of the shift: moving some boxes of supplies around, setting out mats, letting down staircases. Let us know if you have mobility / dexterity / load-bearing issues. If you can't do any of that, but you can still clean showers, that's fine. You need to be able to tolerate some sun.

You don't have to commit to be there every Wednesday. We'll let you know how you can schedule which shifts you want to take.

Volunteer: Wednesday Greeter

Note: Do not sign up for shifts via this volunteerslo.org site, instead sign up as a volunteer at the Shower the People site and we will show you how to sign up for individual shifts.

The Greeter works on-site at one or more of the locations where Shower the People SLO operates. You will greet our guests, learn their needs, give them the supplies they need (e.g. underwear, socks, toothbrush/toothpaste, comb) from our supplies, and help us keep statistics about who our guests are. You also keep track of what order guests have signed up in, so you know who is next to shower.

It's important that you be hospitable and welcoming. Sometimes letting someone get something off their chest to a good listener is as important a service as giving them a shower, so you also need to be patient and sympathetic.

Volunteer: Wednesday Driver

Note: Do not sign up for shifts via this volunteerslo.org site, instead sign up as a volunteer at the Shower the People site and we will show you how to sign up for individual shifts.

The Driver drives the van and shower trailer from the place in SLO where we park it between shifts to the site in Grover Beach where we offer showers, and then returns it after the shift.

You set up the trailer on arrival—leveling it with jacks, chocking the wheels—and do some of the initial mechanical set-up, including getting the electrical system up and running, hooking up hoses or starting the water pump, and laying out a grey water disposal hose.

You do a little bookkeeping (keeping track of odometer readings and any mechanical issues).

After a roughly three-hour shift in which the trailer operates, giving showers to guests, you help shut it down and drive it back to our parking location in SLO where you secure it for the next driver.

Notes:

Do not sign up for shifts via this volunteerslo.org site, instead sign up as a volunteer at the Shower the People site and we will show you how to sign up for individual shifts. You do not need any special driver's license. A regular California driver's license and a reasonably clean driving record is sufficient. We'll help train you and give you an experienced buddy your first couple of times out. You may decide to also work as a greeter or shower cleaner once you get the trailer on-site, or you can relax or go elsewhere until it's time to pack up and take the trailer back. There's some (un)packing and organizing at the beginning and ending of the shift: moving some boxes of supplies around, setting out mats, letting down staircases. Volunteer: Web Content Developer

Note: Do not sign up for this opportunity via this volunteerslo.org site, instead sign up as a volunteer at the Shower the People site.

Shower the People has a fairly simple website at https://showerthepeopleslo.org/. It is mostly-static, but we sometimes need to adjust the content and we periodically need to add short items to the News section.

As the Web Content Developer you would be the one to modify or add this content.

The more technical aspects of site maintenance and keeping the software updated and the server secure are taken care of by someone else.

Shower the People’s website is a WordPress site that uses the Avada Builder page builder. You need to have (or develop) some level of proficiency with these tools to do this job. We have some limited in-house understanding of these tools and our own basic documentation on how to use them for our site, but for the finer points you would need to do your own research.

As the Web Content Developer, your responsibilities would include:

Ensure that the website content is accurate, effective, and up-to-date.Write "News" copy, in coordination with other volunteers, to highlight news related to Shower the People's mission.
Coordinate with the social media guru to boost the visibility of our content.Report any technical issues with the site to our website maintenance consultant.

After a roughly three-hour shift in which the trailer operates, giving showers to guests, you help shut it down and drive it back to our parking location where you secure it for the next driver.

Let us know if you have mobility / dexterity / load-bearing issues. If you can't do any of that, but you can still drive, that's fine.

You don't have to commit to be there every Tuesday. We'll let you know how you can schedule which shifts you want to take.

Volunteer: Thursday Shower Cleaners

So each shower will need as many as eleven clean-ups.

Volunteer: Sister Programs Liaison

Note: Do not sign up for this opportunity via this volunteerslo.org site, instead sign up as a volunteer at the Shower the People site.

Shower the People is one of several independent programs operating in California that offer showers to people experiencing homelessness.

There is great potential for us to improve our processes by learning from the successes and mistakes of other programs. However currently there is only very limited communication between these many programs.

As Sister Programs Liaison you would be responsible for establishing and maintaining lines of communication between Shower the People and its sister programs elsewhere in California.

We do not anticipate this being a job with a great deal of daily workload, but there may be times when we want to consult with the larger network of programs about questions like:

How does your program respond to [some challenging problem]?What product does your program use for [some need]?How is your program responding to [some grant opportunity or some new law]?

As Sister Programs Liaison you would be responsible for contacting representatives from these programs about questions like these (which you would get from the Shower the People operations committee or board of directors) and then summarizing the answers you receive for the use of our program.

You would also be responsible for fielding questions from these other programs to us, and forwarding them to members of our team who can best answer them.

We already have a good list of programs operating in California along with contact information, but you would also be responsible for maintaining this list as new programs appear, others fade away, or contact information changes.

If you are particularly ambitious (this is not a requirement of the position), you might also visit some of these sister program sites and report back to us about what you discover.

If you are particularly ambitious (this is not a requirement of the position), you might also visit some of these sister program sites and report back to us about what you discover.

Volunteer: Continuing Education Director

Note: Do not sign up for this opportunity via this volunteerslo.org site, instead sign up as a volunteer at the Shower the People site.

On-site volunteers for Shower the People are trained for their particular roles (greeter, cleaner, driver, supervisor) on-site by experienced mentors.

But we occasionally want to offer additional training to volunteers that goes beyond this. Examples might include:

Conflict de-escalation techniquesTrauma-informed care insightsHow to work with emotionally-demanding guestsSelf-care techniques for avoiding burnout

As the Continuing Education Director, you would:

Consult with the operations committee to discern which sorts of trainings would be most useful.Discover opportunities for such trainings in the community or people who could provide the trainings. (We may, for example, be able to piggy-back on trainings offered by other agencies to their employees or volunteers.)
Pitch a case for any necessary funding to our board of directors.Invite our volunteers to the training.

We anticipate that there will likely be no more than one such training opportunity offered to our volunteers per quarter. But this is flexible.

Volunteer: Saturday Driver

Note: Do not sign up for shifts via this volunteerslo.org site, instead sign up as a volunteer at the Shower the People site and we will show you how to sign up for individual shifts.

The Driver drives the van and shower trailer from the place where we park it between shifts to the site where we offer showers, and then returns it after the shift.

After a roughly three-hour shift in which the trailer operates, giving showers to guests, you help shut it down and drive it back to our parking location where you secure it for the next driver.

Notes:

We will train you how to drive and set up. Contact us and our driver coordinator will reach out to you to set up a training opportunity. Let us know if you have mobility / dexterity / load-bearing issues. If you can't do any of that, but you can still drive, that's fine.

You don't have to commit to be there every Saturday. We'll let you know how you can schedule which shifts you want to take.

Volunteer: Museum Docent

Do you have an interest in people of all ages and from around the world?  Do you get excited about learning and teaching?

If so, we'd love to have you as a docent at the History Center Museum.

We are looking for responsible, reliable volunteers to greet visitors - historical training is provided, but you aren't expected to know all the answers. It's less important to know a specific date than it is to help a visitor feel engaged and interested.

There will also be infrequent light sales in our bookstore - we'll teach you to use Square.

This is a great opportunity to learn about the history of our community and share the love of learning with the public.

Free parking provided.

Our Mission: We recognize death as a natural and personal event. In this spirit, we support the community in working with those near the end of life and the people who love them by providing in-home support, caregiver respite, grief counseling, support groups, community grief response, and education.

Fiscal Management: The Board of Directors is required by law to carry the burden of fiscal responsibility of Hospice SLO County.

Volunteer: Mentor - Big Brothers Big Sisters

We are seeking volunteer mentors to be matched with a child or youth in the community. The commitment is just 6 hours a month for at least one year and involves forming a meaningful relationship with a child or youth in your region who is facing adversity and whose parent/guardian has requested support. Mentors and children are strategically matched and professionally supported throughout the length of their relationship.

You can choose which age group you're interested in mentoring and provide us with all the details of your perfect match. Like hiking? Enjoy art projects? Play music? We'll find your ideal match.

It takes a while to be matched - you'll go through a process of interviews and background checks - but it's worth the wait. Volunteer mentors in our programs get as much out of the process as our mentees do.

One-to-one mentor relationships change children's lives for the better, forever!

Visit: www.slobigs.org or call: 805-781-3226 for more information.

Volunteer: Love dogs? Raise a future service dog puppy!

Volunteer to raise a puppy and be a part of something truly life changing! Canine Companions Puppy Raising Program provides a unique opportunity for volunteers from all over the country to assist with our very important mission of providing service dogs to people with disabilities.

As a puppy raiser, you'll play a vital role in preparing our future service dogs.

No dog experience is necessary- option for a mentor for first-time raisers. Most commit to raising a puppy for its full journey, but options for co-raising or shorter-term assistance are also available. Opportunity to join an extraordinary community of other puppy raisers, volunteers & graduates. Excellent service project opportunity for homeschool, FFA, 4-h & other community organizations.

Here's what's required for the 14-18 month journey:

Provide a safe & loving environment for a puppy (the only dog under 12 months old in your home). Teach the puppy manners and basic skills- we'll show you how to do this! You’ll join a supportive network of experienced volunteers. Work closely with Canine Companions to monitor the puppy’s progress. Be responsible for food & feeding a recommended diet, veterinary expenses and attend an average of two puppy classes/month (either ran by Canine Companions or pre-approved classes) Transport the dog to the regional training center at the projected turn-in time. Provide the puppy with age-appropriate socialization opportunities, such as public outings and veterinary appointments. Keep the puppy on a leash at all times, unless supervised in a securely fenced area. Use a kennel or crate for sleeping indoors. Supervise the puppy throughout the day (some volunteers are able to obtain permission to bring their puppy to work).

To explore more, visit our puppy raising FAQ, fill out an application interest form or join an upcoming virtual volunteer info. session.

Transport the dog to the regional training center at the projected turn-in time. Offer the puppy age-appropriate socialization opportunities, including public outings and veterinary appointments. Ensure the puppy's safety by keeping it on a leash at all times unless supervised in a securely fenced area, and provide a kennel or crate for sleeping indoors. Supervise the puppy throughout the day (some volunteers may even bring their puppy to work with permission).

Volunteer: Spay & Neuter Cat Trappers - SLO, Morro Bay, Atascadero, Paso & 5 Cities Areas

Trap & Transport Cats:

This is one of our greatest needs!

Set the traps the evening before the vet appointments, the morning of the appointments, transport cats in the traps to the vet’s office. Give directions for ear tipping, testing and vaccination to the vet technician and leave carriers for the cats to recuperate in.

In the late afternoon, pickup the cats from the vets office and recuperate the cats in the carriers over night. If more appointments are set, go back to the trapping site that evening and set more traps. In the morning release the cats in the carriers and transport the new cats in the traps to the vet’s office. Keep repeating process until all the cats at the site are altered.

The Feline Network pays for all spay & neuter services, provides trap, cat carriers and food to bait the traps.  You provide your time and efforts :)

If two people work on this together, the process can be shared.  We have 2 retired men who live in the south county area who are trapping for us now.  We really need one or two trappers in the Morro Bay area and could always use more trappers in the 5 Cities areas.

This is a free service that the Feline Network provides to the community.
