What We Do

The Central Coast Aquarium (formerly the Avila Beach Sea Life Center) is the only organization in San Luis Obispo County that focuses on marine science education for grades k-12. Since 1994, the CCA has taught approximately 19,000 students about the marine life found along the central coast of California. One of the CCA’s most successful marine science education programs is is the Floating Lab that takes students out onto San Luis Obispo Bay for a day of marine life discovery. The students participate in the Floating Lab sample the animals beneath the surface using a trawl net towed behind a boat. The animals are used as a hands-on educational tool to teach the visiting students about the diversity and ecology of marine life found in our near-shore waters. The Floating Lab is a very popular program that has enjoyed strong school participation.

In addition, we are a public aquarium, with over 80 species of marine animals on exhibit. We offer public talks and feedings twice an hour, free with admission. Our volunteers learn how to give those talks, feedings and to offer shark encounters to the individuals and groups, alike.
