Who We Are

The American Red Cross prevents and alleviates human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors. Our diverse and compassionate team supports the ten counties of Central California.

Here in San Luis Obispo County, the Red Cross is active in a host of activities: preparing for disasters by educating the community, training volunteers to respond in a variety of roles, and partnering with local agencies and community organizations; serving our military and veterans with emergency communication services, pre-deployment briefings, and participating in stand-downs; and providing health and safety services such as CPR and First Aid classes.

And whenever disaster strikes, whether a local house fire or a major earthquake, the Red Cross responds to make sure that our community is taken care of and on the road to recovery. We do this with an incredible volunteer workforce that reflects the communities' we serve.

What We Do

There are dozens of ways to volunteer with the Red Cross, and they vary by location, interest, and availability. In San Luis Obispo, our volunteers respond to home fires, support active duty military and their families through casework and events, screen and welcome new team members, and train to be regional and national emergency responders.

All Red Cross volunteers complete an online application and new member screening. They train in areas they want to serve, as well as commit to department standards and requirements.
